A self-directed approach is increasingly important in learning at all levels, be it academic or the workplace. People tend to shy away from SDL because they feel it means learners do what they want, when they want, and consequently, not a lot of "real" learning gets done. This simply is not true. Even if a fully self-directed approach is impossible, we can encourage students to take on some responsibility for their learning by introducing opportunities for self-direction in some way.
